Tech 5 Take-backs

In an earlier post, I claimed that John C. Dvorak's "Tech 5" was a great triumph of sound effects.

Now I think it's too good.

The bubbling cauldron sound effect that usually lies in the background is starting to remind me of a hot tub. Now I like John, but the thought of sitting in a hot tub with him talking tech is a little disturbing to me. Actually, it's quite disturbing.

The show is getting better and better. I think Friday's show was just about there. For those of you that have followed the show for a while, you can see John getting more comfortable with each show.

Now if we could only have him do a stock show as well. I love his column in Market Watch each week.

Cali and Neal did a great audio update on Cali's condition.

GeekBrief was one of my major influences for getting the courage to get out there and review podcasts. Cali always puts a smile on my face. It's funny how people you never met can feel so much like family.

Get better Cali, we need more briefs, unless Neal wants to do one. I think that would be hilarious.

Jamie Oliver needs work

Just caught the new Jamie Oliver podcast.

I'm a big fan of the Naked Chef but his attempt at a podcast leaves much to be desired.

The shoe is choppy and out of focus. It just really bothers me. I think the information imparted is great but the video mess just isn't worth the time.

My advice would be to check into Podshow. I think a really cool show could come out of that marriage.

John C Dvorak is the Savant of CastBlaster

Tech Five has always been a show that I've loved. I guess that it captures the cranky essense of its host John C. Dvorak. John has been a big influence for me to get back into the podcasting arena with the PCWL podcast.

The thing that's always bugged me about the show is that John uses CastBlaster which I loathe (sorry Adam Curry). I just have never liked it. Maybe it's aimed more at pro podcasters, but I like the ability to make a few edits before I post. CastBlaster is more of a "one shot" recording.

The other annoying thing is the level of sound effects that come with the package. I must say that John has used these to perfection. I never thought anyone could use the bubbling cauldron to make a podcast pop, but John has done it.

It's nice to see him adding more sounds clips to the podcast (more Monty Python please). It makes it fun while still giving us his "cranky" view of the tech world.

Way to go John. You may be the best ad for CastBlaster yet.

Now if they would just work on a Mac edition......

Kudos to Jeff on commandN 103.

For his "Tech Tips" segment, he showed the Logitech Harmony remote as a solution to the mess of remotes that all of us geeks have in our living rooms. It allows for easy setup (via USB and the web) and is Mac or PC compatible. Plus at an entry price of under $200, it's a steal.

I was looking for something like this for a long time.

I was working on a few longer essays for PCWL this week to be released in audio and written form, but got a little sidetracked with life.

Just so the blog doesn't get too annoying, I have added a Podcast link section on the right side of the blog. That should let you know when the new PCWL Podcasts are released without me having to post a new blog entry every time.

BTW, we are also listed in iTunes, which allows one click subscription to my audio ramblings.

I have also been working on a viable social network-style website that will allow everyone to voice their opinions on everything going on in the podosphere. That's basically what I spent most of my weekend doing instead of giving you a fine PCWL audio show.

I'm also toying around with the idea of handing out the "Download of the week" to one podcast episode that just seems to nail it that week.

Well, that's what I've been up to....how was your weekend?

DotBoom Finishes Its Season In Style

I was excited over the weekend to see that the season finale of DotBoom was finally released.

There has been a lot of stuff going on this season. I think the plot lines even escaped the grasp of creator Brian Hogg for a while. This last episode tied everything back together with some great voiceovers, not to mention raccoon faces on sticks (which I find way too funny for some reason).

If you are new to DotBoom, I wouldn't recommend starting with this episode. Try and go back and watch from the beginning. You will enjoy it.

And I'm not just saying that because I actually got one of my Facebook slogan suggestions on Diab's shirt for this episode. Does that make me a Dot Boom fanboy?

Brian seriously needs some sponsorship. If anyone has a product that would go well with slightly shabby puppets that work in a computer industry drop him an email. I'm thinking badly done product placement. Come on Apple...

Davorak does a great job with a brief synopsis of the day's events. That is exactly what I want to do with the podcasts I voraciously consume.

After playing with an iPhone this weekend, I'm still not convinced that it's a better option than my n800.

Kyle Majestic Tech Show: A Great Parody (I hope)

A few days ago, I was searching around the new Digg homepage to find some interesting new podcasts. This is where I stumbled upon a post about the new Kyle Majestic show.

The show is a riot, and I hope it continues. With so many bland tech podcasts out there, Kyle Majestic perfectly parodies them. Kyle appears to be a very "confused" southern gentleman who would look more comfortable shooting stuff with a big gun and going to monster truck rallies than giving you tech advice. That's part of the charm. The choppy video editing and perfectly timed pauses (and looks of total confusion) are priceless.

Even the website is perfectly bland, save for a wonderful unicorn. (;

I'm staying subscribed to this one to see where it goes. While it doesn't measure up to "Ask a Ninja" yet, I think it could get there.

Leo Laporte, your days are numbered as King of All Tech.....

Most podcasters take vacations, Cali makes it into a fun road trip that we all are enjoying. I think Podshow should put up the dough for Cali and Neal to hit the road for a month or two and do viewer meet-ups all over the world.

If he wasn't so busy running one of the internet's biggest companies, I think he could have a cool show on Revision 3 of his own. It's nice to see an organization that isn't afraid to laugh at itself from time to time.

Webb Alert Gives Credit Where Credit is Due

I was thinking that G4’s Morgan Webb was going to be late to the podcast party when I first heard about her show “Webb Alert”. Over the years tons of talent has left TechTV/G4 (Kevin Rose, Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton etc.) to forge their own success on the web. Morgan’s entry seemed a bit too little too late.

It’s funny how you can prejudge something. I have just digested every episode of Webb Alert for the past week. I can safely say that Morgan has captured something that most of the video podcasts out there have missed...a true blog news show.

Sure, a lot of podcasts out there talk about blog postings, but they always seem to play second fiddle to the “tech journalists” commentary. Morgan effectively and effortlessly shines a spotlight on the bloggers work, not her take on it. I especially have to give her props for the excellent visuals that highlight the website that the content was taken from.

I predict good things for this show. I’m guessing that she will join up with one of the big players in the online video arena very soon. My money would be on Revision3.

Keep it up Morgan, I’m definitely going to stay subscribed.

Port City PD

Just got done with the second episode of Port City PD and I'm in shock.

The first season was OK. You could definitely tell that it was trying to find its voice (much like my previous comments on "Something To Be Desired"). The season finale was very lackluster in my opinion. I had considered just dumping the podcast. Only Podshow's aggressive advertising kept me from tossing it in my trash bin.

I have to say a big thanks to Podshow. The second season looks phenomenal. The first two episodes have been fast paced, and visually stunning.

Port City PD is definitely the "Miami Vice" of the 21st. century.

I'm definitely staying subscribed to this one. Keep it up PCPD crew!

PodShow Picks up Kmart sponsorship

Well, you have to admit that Podshow is doing a great job lining up sponsors. I just noticed that the site (which serves my podcast channel) is splashed with Kmart ads. My latest listen to the DSC confirmed that Kmart is indeed a sponsor.

I'm starting to like the Podshow model more and more each day. When it first started, I was one of its biggest detractors. Now I'm really starting to change my mind. It's really hard for total new adopters to actually see what the "average" person sees in these sites. Maybe we all need to step back and re-evaluate our own net ventures as well.

Earl is back in the house

The "Rod Serling" of the internet has now picked up a sponsor, video sharing site lulu.com. It also sounds like "Stranger Things" will be back very shortly. I can't wait. I was concerned because I hadn't heard much from Earl recently. It's great to know that he is doing better than ever.

Wait, who am I again?

Oh, that's right. I'm the guy who is supposed to be reviewing podcasts.

I actually think that getting my Apple TV was a bad move. I have spent more and more time watching podcasts and less and less times on my Mac reviewing them.

As the summer sun starts to set, I have to get back to the basics. I have spent the last few days thinking about how I could make this more of an interactive experience for everyone. I'm not the only person to watch/listen to podcasts. The podcast nation is growing every day. I would love to give all of you a chance to voice your opinions as well. Look for something new in the next month.

iPhone readiness equal podcast slowing

I think everyone in the podosphere is pretty much shut down until next week.

Yep, next week will see the arrival of the "Jesus Phone" (aka the iPhone). I think a lot of the "poderati" are waiting to take advantage of the huge amount of press next week.

Look for specail podcasts from Leo Laporte and the Digg boys as they camp out at Apple stores and try not to let security know about the excess alcohol that is residing in their laptop bags.

Also look for Apple Phone Show host Scott Borne to spontaneously burst into a ball of flame generated by his own excitement.

I'll try and provide a full wrap-up next week leading to the big release at 6pm on Friday.

Adam Forgets To Edit and We Learn a Bit

What's up with Podshow?

Adam Curry’s Podshow seems to be trying to make itself better.

Their latest move is to introduce the “suck-less” zone. The survey will allow users of Podshow to provide some feedback into the redesign of the site as well as its services.

While I think that this is a great thing for the users of Podshow (who tend to be a vocal lot anyway) I’m a little worried. Since its inception, Podshow has always felt to me to be a rushed version of myspace. It needs to strike out on its own and not rely on designs and concepts that have come before it on other sites.

Along those creative lines, Podshow is now promoting channels. You can subscribe to other channels as well as create your own. Channels are basically an RSS feed containing the podcast shows that you listen to. There are some creative channels out there right now. If you are interested in trying one out, check out the DSC channel.

New iTunes 7.2

Looks like iTunes 7.2 is out with new support for DRM free music (though why they call it iTunes Plus is beyond me).

There is nothing available (as of Wed morning) for DRM free music, but I'm sure that we will see something today.

The best thing that I have noticed so far is that my iTunes got a whole hell of a lot faster.

Webnation: The Next Evolution of Tech News

Webnation is a new show (yes, it’s on TV too) in Canada that features “commandN” and former TechTV-Canada host Amber Macarther. The show is very TV “overproduced”, but the spirit of a podcast is still in the show.

The show feels a bit like “Entertainment Tonight” for the Web 2.0 generation. You can usually see a few YouTube clips and at least one interview (done expertly with a chat client) with a notable web celebrity.

The length of the show is just right. Too much more and the average web user’s ADD would kick in.

Amber does a great job with the show. My only complaint is the studio is a bit geeky. I love what she does with the look and feel of commandN. Web 2.0 almost seems to have an “urban” vibe for me, not the techie geeky background that looks like a NASA control center.

Thankfully, that is a very minor complaint. I recommend Webnation to anyone who wants to get a weekly fix of their tech headlines. This show is definitely THE blueprint for what new media will look like in the future.

For all of you that are a lot more brave than I am.

Hosted by one of the best voices in podcasting, Brian Cooley, Car Tech gives a great roundup of the newest technology for your car. From navigation to sound systems, Car Tech has it all.

The pacing is fast and really well done. The show primarily consists of the latest car tech news, interviews with industry experts, and then we ride along on an audio test drive of a brand new car.

Now if I could just figure out how to get that job.........

Car Tech is one of the most original podcasts that internet powerhouse CNET puts out. It’s nice to finally see CNET not replicating the same tech show over and over (ala Crave, Que, and Buzz Out Loud).

If you are interested in cars and/or technology, this is a great podcast for you.

Long Time No Blog/PCWL Update

Long time no blog folks. Life has been busy. Just got a brand new car, enjoying the nice weather with the family, got a Nokia n800, and have been busy as heck at work.

Hopefully, anyone who really wants to get way too much information on me on a minute by minute basis will check out my tumblelog. It basically drops all of my blogger, twitter, google shared news and flickr feeds into one place. So far, I’m really loving it.

I was just sitting here trying to compile a list of interesting podcast news so here goes.

1. On the Daily Source Code, Adam continues to go against the grain and play “non-podsafe” music. While I love the music (especially the mashups) I just worry that something big is about to happen.
2. Speaking of the DSC, Adam and the Lady Patricia are going on a tour of military bases in Afghanistan. This should be quite the event. I’m sure it will be chronicled on the DSC in the weeks and months ahead.
3. Earl Newton needs your help. After putting out two more great episodes of “Stranger Things” Earl’s strapped for cash. He’s asking that you contribute just one dollar to the show to help keep it alive. Each show so far has been a breath of fresh air on the net. Let’s keep it going.
4. My favorite podcast in the entire universe is Wingin’ It. It was the second podcast that I found after the Daily Source Code. It appears that after almost three years, Wingin’ it is going away. If you want to know more about why, check out episode 105. I must say that I’m sad to see it go, but there is a lot more to Farpoint Media than Wingin’ It.
5. “Sanctuary” the new web only production, staring Stargate SG-1’s Amanda Tapping (and created by just about everyone on the SG-1 production team), just came out with their first episode. I will be reviewing it very soon, so I won’t talk about it too much. Those of you that want to watch the first 17 minute episode can see it for free on YouTube. The episodes after that will cost you $1.99.

That is going to have to do it for the update right now. My latte is ready and I hate when it gets cold.

Gear Media Tech

Hosted by internet video guru Alex Lindsay and a huge supporting cast of people that revolve around the TWIT empire, GMT is a really serious look at the business of podcasting both video and audio.

I was a big fan of Farpoint Media’s “Podholes” for just such advice (back when I was making sucky podcasts). GMT blows “Podholes” out of the water in one respect...it’s video.

The video really makes the difference. Now, I’m not just getting an audio description of the latest tech for podcasting, I’m able to see it. I was really surprised what an strong effect this had on me. This must have been what early adopters of television felt like.

GMT is very much focused on the high end of podcast production, but it feels like a very personal show that brings a lot of the jargon down to the “average” podcaster. I wouldn’t watch this show if you are just getting into podcast production. I think “Podholes” does a better job with that. For intermediate podcasters, I would highly recommend GMT.

It will be very interesting to see where Lindsay takes the show. He had a tremendous wealth of experience to draw from for the show. I think it will be a big hit among pro podcasters.

MacBreak Weekly Just Gets Better and Better

Why do I love MacBreak Weekly so much? I have no clue. Maybe it’s the Mac geek in me. Maybe it’s the people that Leo gathers each week to chat about all things Mac. I really couldn’t tell you. I actually wait for this show to be released every week. That’s pretty rare for me, the guy who never truely gets caught up on podcasts.

Best TWIT show by far.

dotBoom: Puppets with attitude

If you like your puppetry a little “saucy” then dotBoom is for you.

Created by Brian Hogg, dotBoom is a funny take on life inside a web development company. Though it is about a web company, this show will appeal to anyone who spends their day crammed inside a cubicle.

It is by no means a “polished’ production. Many of the episodes feel like they were improvised on the spot. However, the creatively made sets and puppets are very well done. dotBoom draws you in with its hilarious plots and strong characters.

The show continues a trend that I’m seeing more and more on the net. Independently produced shows seem to have way too many characters at first. It’s almost like they are shotgunning the characters in the hope that a larger group of characters will appeal to a larger audience.

dotBoom is defiantly worth a look. The first 10 episodes are a bit rough, but the show is rapidly settling down into an instant internet classic.

Podshow Press?

Mark spilled some beans about an upcoming project on the DSC last week.

Mark is heading up "Podshow Press" a publishing arm of Podshow. Podshow press is very similar to the Podsafe Music Network where the royalties come back to the artist 100% (in this case, minus the cost of making the book). It is an interesting concept that just might draw a lot of unpublished authors to the Podshow fold.

Podshow seems to be growing quite a bit. With sponsorships galore and an ever expanding universe, it looks like Podshow is the dark horse of the podcast media empire race. Kudos to Ron Bloom and Adam Curry for getting things done.

I believe that diversifying and using the connections that companies like Podshow and Revision3 have will help to bring podcasting and long tail creative works into the mainstream.

Looks like the next generation of content will be made by you and I, not Hollywood.

Podshow Gets Some Upgrades and Adam Goes on Vacation

Two interesting things seem to be going on in the Podshow Network.

Those of you that regularly subscribe to great Podshow shows (Including my subscriptions: Daily Source Code, GeekBriefTV, and TeXtra) might have noticed some interruption in service recently.

The network is undergoing an upgrade and their downtime is our uptime. If you notice your feed is stalled in iTunes, head on over to Podshow's website. You will be greeted by some great content that actually REPLACES the old "We are down" message that most other sites post. I saw a great "American Heartbreak" video the last time I ventured there during a site outage.

The second big event (at least for one day) was that Adam Curry actually went on vacation and TURNED OVER THE MIC to PCH's own Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff. I thought the show worked out great. Too bad that we haven't seen anything more all week. I would love to see Mark doing more with subbing for Adam on the DSC. Nicely done.

Something To Be Desired Season 3: Lovin' It More Than Ever

I know, I should have had this up a long time ago, but I just finished Season 3 of “Something to Be Desired”. From my earlier post you will know all about it and hopefully have been watching it.

Season 3 pretty much begins where season 2 left off. Caroline and Dean’s relationship is explored (from beginning to end) and really weaves constant thread as we move through the season.

The most humorous story I feel revolves around WANT hiring new DJ’s. These roles are masterfully played by Kerri Morrison, Dan Hinder, and Kellee Maize. I found their stories a lot more interesting than a lot of the other stuff going on with already established characters.

Another character who really started to stand out this season was Leo (Will Guffey). I think in the first two seasons, Leo was essentially the comic relief, the annoying guy that you always find at parties. This season, he is allowed to mature a bit. I think that by thinning a lot of the story arcs, we really get to see Guffey’s acting talent shine.

I’m looking forward to season 4. If the quality of the program keeps increasing, I think this show is going to be very popular indeed. I’m advising everyone to check it out.

The Onion News....not the best....actually it sucks.

I was eagerly anticipating one of my favorite “news” sources “The Onion” as it was launched as a video podcast.

Then I watched the first few episodes.

Where I think The Onion shined as a newspaper, I think it fails as a video podcast. The show is wonderfully produced, but just isn’t funny. I really think I would love it if we didn’t have shows like “The Daily Show” already on cable.

It feels like a case of “too little too late” to me.

I won’t be subscribing to it.

Where are all the reviews?

Don't worry, I'm still watching and listening to a lot of podcasts (check out the side bar for how many I've already consumed in ONE DAY), but my time is going to be divided between PCWL and my new site "Rochester UNclassified" (RUC). While not of any podcast note, RUC is a new classified ad site for the city of Rochester, MN. I'm working at promoting the site in the city, and that takes me away from the keyboard for greater and greater times.

I should have a few more "labs" review out soon.

Boned "Busted"

Just listened to the pilot episode of "Boned" Podshow's new game show podcast.

After listening to the first episode, I was terribly let down. Not only was "Boned" a really bad concept, but the show was structured horribly and the host "Johnny Todd" was about as exciting as a can of corned beef hash. I get the idea of picking bones to reveal a question, but it's just hard to visualize on an audio podcast (especially when 90% of all Americans have no idea of where the bones are in the first place).

On the flip side, the idea for a podcast game show is a good idea. I'm sure that the producers of "Boned" intend for listeners to play (I get it, it's a pilot). I think that TalkShoe would be a great platform for a show like this. A pool of people could sign on to TalkShoe and then two would be chosen to go head to head. The rest could be a live "podosphere" audience cheering them on.

I'll stay subscribed to "Boned" for a while, but this first show was a real dud.

Has anyone noticed that Adam Curry has been playing a lot of non-podsafe music recently on the Daily Source Code?

Is he just tempting fate or is he trying to make a point?

I know Adam feels strongly about podsafe music and the ability to play all forms of music on podcasts, but this may not be the best way to make a point.

Keep doing a great job getting artists on the PMN Adam, don't get tied up in legal challenges just to prove a point.

The good thing about an Apple TV, I get to sit and watch my video podcasts. The bad thing...I keep finding more podcasts to subscribe to.

Expect several more reviews coming out of the labs soon. And I haven't forgotten about you "Stranger Things".

Leo Goes to TalkShoe for TWIT Empire

From the last Macbreak Weekly, it sounds as if Leo Laporte might be moving his entire TIWT empire to “live” recording via TalkShoe. For those of you that don’t know about Talkshoe, the service basically lets podcasters record their shows as a live stream so fans can hear the show in real time. The audience can also participate in a “call in” fashion through the service.

Leo has been messing with this for a few months now. It sounds like he really likes it. It does give him the chance to interact with his audience, which I think Leo feeds off (I would too).

One question remains. How useful is the live format? Doesn’t this just put us back where we were, having to go to our computers at a set time to listen to a show? I think the best part of the podcasting revolution is the ability to time shift. Listening wherever and whenever you want. I don’t think they are going to see large crowds showing up at a set time to listen to a low quality live version of the show.

I know that they are still doing the podcast version, but I just question the need for doing the show via a format like TalkShoe. I think that having people call in just detracts from the quality of the show. The questions aren’t all that good, and the same callers are starting to be as regular as some of the guests across the TWIT shows.

I believe that for the TWIT empire to move forward, they are going to have to start moving to a video format, not mess with trifles like Talkshoe.

The Death of the Podcast Limit?

Note: This review talks about primarily audio podcasts. It relies heavily on how I consume podcasts. Your actual podcast consumption may vary.

I’ve been aware for a while of a subtle shift in podcast behavior. The “CD time limit” seems to be going the way of the dodo.

The “CD time limit” was originally intended to be the maximum time limit for most podcasts. It was defined as the length of time (usually 70 to 80 minutes) that one person could burn to a CD. This was back in the days that most people were still more comfortable with CD players (usually in their cars) than mp3 players for listening to podcasts.

Recently (and finally) that ceiling is being busted through. Shows like “This Week In Tech” and “Wingin’ It” are finally realizing that the bulk of their audience is either listening with an mp3 player (thanks car adapters) or listening through their computers.

So this poses another question. Are podcasts becoming too long? To answer this question, I’ve attempted to break podcasts up into three categories: “micropodcasts” (up to 30 minutes), “macropodcats” (30-80 minutes) and “megapodcasts” (more than 80 minutes long).

The smallest form of the podcast is the “micropodcast”. These tend to be more regular shows that put out a large number of podcasts every week. Shows like “Buzz out Loud” and “The Daily Source Code” (minus the music) tend to hang around this mark. These podcasts are usually easily digestible on my way to work or when I just want to “veg out” for a short time during the day.

“Macropodcasts” tend to appeal more to me when I’m doing something fairly repetitive for long periods of time. When I’m plugging away at something at work or home, these are the ‘casts that keep me motivated. Shows like net@nite are great when my hands are working hard, but my brain isn’t.

Finally, “Megapodcasts” are the marathon runners of the podosphere. I’m seeing podcasts that are getting to be three hours long (I’m talking about you “Doctor Who: Podshock). More and more shows are moving to this long format. These are podcasts for long trips and for times when I just want to blow a good two to three hours. Friday afternoons at work are great for podcasts like this.

Most of the shorter podcasts seem to be posted around five times a week. The longer podcasts tend to be weekly. If you total all the time up at the end of the week for a normal daily show, it reaches the longer weekly show’s time limit. So is there really an effective difference between the two? Is one more popular than another?

I think the answer lies in how podcasts are broken up. I think if you can insert natural breaks into a “megapodcast” (segments, feedback, heck even commercials) I think it holds people’s interest. If the show is one long conversation between two people, it can get a bit boring.

So we have finally seen the death of the “CD time limit”. Only time will tell if longer and longer shows in any of these three podcast lengths will be accepted by the podosphere.

Bum Rush Update

Bum Rush the Charts: Results and Implications.
A lot of you were probably expecting me to write about the Bum Rush results sooner. Like the Apple TV, I wanted to take a step back and read some of the interpretations or our little “Podcaster Power” movement before reporting in.

For those of you that haven’t kept up with it, “Bum Rush” was started by a group of podcasters that felt strongly that independent music was being ignored by mainstream record companies. Their idea was to have everyone in the podosphere buy one track (“Mine Again” by Black Lab) on a single day via the iTunes music store. Their hope was to move the song up the iTunes charts.

I am happy to report that it worked! “Mine Again” reached number 11 on the iTunes charts and BROKE INTO THE US CHARTS at 99 as well as many other world wide rock charts. This is a huge feat for a band that does not have the influence of a major record company behind them.

I have read several blogs have questioned that this tactic was a little more than a “puff piece” that really doesn’t mean anything. They point out that together we have the power to pull something of this scale off together for one song, but we are not strong enough to motivate or move many different songs.

This may be true, but there has to be a way to bring independent/podsafe artists into the mainstream. I think Adam Curry’s recent inspirational idea of a “Podsafe Idol” contest is just one of the ways that people are going to embrace podsafe music.

Adam’s idea (in its basic form) is to use Podshow’s connections with Apple to work on a joint effort. There would be a Podshow produced podcast where various independent artists are featured. These artists would compete weekly. People would vote by purchasing the song. This seems to make a lot more sense than just wasting your money on a useless text message (you hear me “American Idol”). The podsafe music vote would be accomplished by purchasing the track on iTunes (DRM’ed) and then Podshow would offer the same tune as a free and clear MP3 to the purchaser. Apple would create a “Podsafe” chart that would track the most popular podsafe artists and then the winner would be determined from there.

That whole DRM issue seemed to be the biggest sticking point. With Monday’s announcement that Apple and EMI are going to be selling high quality DRM-free music next month, I think that this program could be very big. Podshow wouldn’t have to provide the mp3 version and concentrate on what it does best, creating high quality podcasts. Apple will get the extra traffic and money from the deal. If they were a selfless company they would give the proceeds back the the artists, but I would guess that’s not going to happen.

This is all speculation at this point, but I wouldn’t discount something like this happening. VC money in Silicon Valley comes with a lot of connections. I really believe that the connections are what make a company successful, not necessarily the money.

If anything, it’s a start. Let’s hope that very soon DRM will be gone and independent artists like Black Lab can be at the top of the Billboard and iTunes charts along with established “big media” artists.

Not another Apple TV review

Unlike most bloggers, I waited a week to review the new Apple TV. I thought I would give it some time before I made a snap judgment.

I’m not going to draw out this post by going into an in-depth analysis of it, but I will summarize the pros and cons (because I know that you are all bored of reading Apple TV reviews).

Summary: If you watch a lot of video podcasts, Apple TV is for you. If you watch a lot of iTunes purchased video content, I wouldn’t waste my time.

Pros
1. Easy to set up.
2. Clean interface and easy to use.
3. Can stream quickly from a computer or store locally on the Apple TV’s hard drive.
4. Decent resolution as long as you play around with the settings (trust me folks, it depends more on your TV’s ability to decode the info sent to it vs. the Apple TV).
5. Ripped DVD’s (that I own BTW) look REALLY GOOD. Thank you iSquint.
6. Ability to sync my audio and video podcasts to iTunes on my Mac and then to my iPod without loosing where i left off.

Cons:
1. Resolution is OK, for purchased iTunes content, but lack of true widescreen and HD formats really suck.
2. Have to convert to specified iTunes H.264 or MP4 formats (easily done with iSquint, but Apple should assist with that).
3. Quirky screen saver sometimes doesn’t work (I have scoured the web and apparently mine is the only one with this problem).
4. Hot as hell! Why are 1.0 products from Apple always wanting to take the place of my furnace?
5. I’ll admit, lack of a proper connection cord has to be included as a con, but FREEKIN’ READ THE WEBSITE YOU WHINY BASTARDS, it clearly indicates that you have to order the cord separately. Most of you would have bought the HDMI cable separately anyway. Thank Apple for at least keeping the cord price to a reasonable level (unlike my local Best Buy).
6. Really should have let us control the volume...and 5.1 surround wouldn’t have been too much to ask (though on my own ripped movies, I swear I have surround).

So if you are a podcast junkie like me, this is a great product. It gets you away from squinting at your computer screen and watching shows as they were intended to be seen. If you plan to use it as your primary TV viewing unit (via content on iTunes), I’d wait until version 2.0, or at least until Apple releases content in “near HD” quality.

That being said, this is a tremendous opportunity for podcasters to put out shows that are BETTER in resolution than mainstream shows that are purchased on iTunes. Please listen to TWIT 92 for a really good discussion of the subject.

Speaking of that, I have more podcasts to watch....please excuse me.

Unfortunately, I have to report that Farpoint Media's own Joe Murphy lost his battle with cancer today. Though I never knew Joe, I felt like I did for the last couple of years that I have been listening to Wingin' It. I looked forward to his quiet commentary once a week.

Joe helped to pioneer podcasting and made thousands laugh with his witty humor and quirky personality.

He will be missed.

Merlin is getting better

Just got done with episode 11 of The Merlin Show. I think the show is really starting to hit its stride. I think that the interview with Peter Hughes of "The Mountain Goats" was brilliant. It really brought out the life of a self proclaimed "pseudo celebrity" and what he goes through on and off the road.

Keep it up Merlin...just stay interesting and funny as hell.

New Format?

Just playing around with a new format for the blog. While Around the Podosphere is getting a lot of attention, I seem to be falling into the same trap of "mainstream blogging" which is just to regurgitate what is out there and transfer it to my blog.

I'm going to try and contribute some full article reviews of podcasts and specific things going on in the podosphere for a while and see how that goes.

Posting shouldn't be about quantity, but quality.

Textra: Good Start...Not Great

Textra is a new video podcast that is hosted by Natali Del Conte. It unfortunately enters an already over saturated market for tech news. This “late to the game” aspect is quickly made up by the “class” the show seems to have. While I love “GeekBrief” and “Diggnation”, they are a bit “blue collar” (does that term make sense on the web?). Textra is more of a “white collar” podcast that strives to be more mainstream. Gone is the independent feel of podcasting in someone’s house, and is replaced by a set.

Natali obviously has great stage presence, but sometimes you can tell that she is still trying to come into her own with the show. I do like the news/opinion format. I think that giving everyone the chance to respond back on her forum is a great idea. Maybe she could also play some audio or video feedback in special editions of Textra (just a suggestion). Probably the thing that bugs me the most is the “two shot” switch, which strives to feel like a MTV, but ends up looking more like cable access (I have the same complaint with “Indigital”.

While I can’t seem to give Textra my full support (I’ll wait a few more episodes for that), I think it’s off to a good start. Natali just has to find her niche. I think episode 6 was her strongest so far where she expressed an opinion about female tech journalists. You could really see how her passion was reflected in her presentation. I went from "kinda" paying attention to totally engaged in what she was saying.

I'll stay subscribed, and you should try it out as well.

9. Cranky Geeks 54: Everyone on the panel pretends to understand Net Neutrality, CompUSA starts to fade away (a tear rolls down my cheek), the guy from Dolby is a little too hyper, and I got to see a proof that everyone was sitting at the same table.

10. Diggnation 86: (Before I start, I just read that Diggnation is going to go “beer free” next year...boycott anyone?). Drinking Corona guys? Wussy much? How to crack any Master Lock, Alex takes way too much time with a boring identity theft stuff, Ramsay’s on Viagra (going twelve hours on his “hacker beeatches”), and babies like attractive people.

Smodcast: Kevin Smith 2.0?

Warning: Smodcast is not for everyone. It carries the dreaded EXPLICIT tag on iTunes. You have been warned.

Hosted by Director Kevin Smith and Producer Scott Mosier, “Smodcast” is a wonderful look into the (messed up?) lives of the men responsible for “Clerks” and it’s bastard stepchildren sequels. I must admit that I’m a bit biased. “Smodcast” is like a dream come true for me. I am not alone in thinking that the commentary tracks on most of Kevin’s movies are (sometimes) more entertaining than the movie itself.

The format is very plain. Kevin and Scott in one room just chatting about random stuff. Think of it as a conversation that you are eavesdropping on. Most of the topics come out of Scott or Kevin’s personal lives. Topics can range from the bizarre (Kevin having a “Bachelor’s Day” in high school) to the just plain perverse (Kevin’s masturbatory habits).

The music tracks under the main audio are funny, but only work really well with earbuds (at least for me). I also wonder if they are stretching “fair use” a bit on some of the songs. Nevertheless, the music makes the show more interesting.

I think that it would be cool to see a video podcast of this show. I think that it would be very popular. Maybe Kevin and Scott could be just leaning against a wall chatting with one another. That would see fitting.

If you are a fan of Kevin’s (or Scott for that matter) seriously consider subscribing to “Smodcast”. The opportunity to get a glimpse of what is really going on in Kevin’s head is too hard to pass up. If you are a fan of his films, you will love this.

Another week, another few podcasts.

1. Infected by Martin Sargent: The Infected Slumber Party. At first I was a little worried that Martin was doing a slumber party show. As usual, my fears soon turned into laughter as David Lawrence stops by (with his Disney “Sleeping Beauty” shirt) to join the slumber party.

2. The Merlin Show 7: Merlin throws out part 2 of the Jonathan Coulton interview. Jonathan tells us about balancing life as a father with life as a performer.

3. Strong Bad Emails: Mine. The Cheat takes control of the episode. Hilarity ensues.

4. Textra 3: Natali please, the two shot is really getting on my nerves.

5. DL.TV 148: Roger is again at the helm of the show (and starting to get darn annoying). The new HD DVD players get reviewed (they are coming down in price folks), and I almost puke when the Dan Rather interview part 2 is shown. Man, that was boring. It serves to remind me why I watch podcasts, so I don’t have to listen to that tripe.

6. The Merlin Show 9: (hmm, did I miss 8?) Marlin continues his interview with Googles’ Jeffery Veen, who deserves a podcast of his own if he wasn’t so darn busy. Merlin’s favorite topic (organization) gets discussed as well as how it influences creativity. We also find out that Google employees get to go home in WIFI shuttles. Nice! I almost with that the entire interview could be shown at once, or at least back to back. One interview melds into the other by this staggered posting.

7. Rocketboom 3-23-2007: Joanne goes for a drive on a very interesting bike that seems to be projecting a “hologram” of her on walls as she rides. Very inventive. One might even say artistic.

8. Rocketboom 3-26-2007: Around the world of robots including Rachel Ray? And heavenly body viewing on the net.

9. Textra 4, 5, 6: Still a little rough under the edges. Keep it up Natali. Congrats, I can now do a formal review.

10. Smodcast 4,5,6: Kevin and Scott ROCK. It's a fanboy's wet dream. Look for the review soon.

11. Buzz Out Loud 3-20-07: The still Molly-less wastes no time jumping back into the DRM battle, a history of blogs, and bring up an interesting potential problems when cell phones and iPods meet.

12. Wingin' It Voicemail 100: The punchline thread is over and the joke minus the punchline is in.

13. Slice of SciFi Voicemail 99/100: I think some stuff went on, but for some reason, my iPod cut off the show. Strange. It's probably something that I did (I hope).

2. Ask a Ninja: Special SXSW. Looks like the ninja put a little something together for SXSW.

3. Ask a Ninja 38. Cool ninja tips for college survival. Best line, "trade your box of Ramon for a cougar".

4. CommandN: Amber, Jeff, Will, and (gasp) Mike in the same place? This is a sign that the world is going to end...nah. Cool look at some neat stuff for you Facebook junkies out there (feel better Jeff).

5. Cranky Geeks 53. In perhaps the next sign of the end of the world, Adam Curry joins the cranks, and does a bang up job. My respect for the "podfather" grows. With the way the show is shot, does anyone get the feeling these people aren't in the same room? Don't even get me started with Dvorak's hair. It seems to have a mind of its own.

6. Diggnation 85. When Diggnation runs under 30 minutes, I get pissed. It usually takes me 30 minutes to get into the grove. This time the boys are LIVE at Park Chalet. Good show, my only gripe? Those hideous mics they use on location look like they are setting up for some serious online gaming after the show.

7. DL.TV 147: I must say I skipped a few of these to catch up (sorry). Roger Chang joins Patrick Norton this time. Dan Rather gets interviewed (looking like the evil Don Johnson) and I almost fell asleep, much like I did when he was doing the news. Near the end of the show we have a touching "Dear Abby" moment where a former tech junkie is given suggestions for getting back in the game.

8. Doctor Who Podshock: Aftershock. Short 5 minute podcast by Lewis reminding everyone of the live taping at ICON TODAY!!! Probably too late (sorry).

9. Geek Brief 139: Cali does another prerecorded segment from her appearance on "Call for Help". Basically we end up seeing very creative holiday uses for "Splinter Cell".

10. Geek Brief 140: Cali got a Wii -- at Sam's Club? This is probably one of the best Wii demos I have seen so far and probably pushed me over the edge to actually purchase one. Way to go Cali. I'm rating this my MUST WATCH, if only for Cali's questionable video game driving skills.

11. Geek Brief 141: After 140, I don't even recall 141...hmmm...nope, still thinkn' about a Wii.

12. Indigital 13: Before I start PLEASE REVISION 3, I HAVE AN APPLE TV NOW, I WANT LARGE FREEKIN' QUICKTIME FILES TO PLAY ON MY TV. Anyway, the best thing about Indigital is that they give away products on the show. That rocks! Keeps me coming back for more. This time it's a Guitar Hero bundle. In other happenings, Hahn makes some dubious reviews (and gets ridiculed), Will drops the F bomb, and Jessica is going to Ecuador. Now to the nitty gritty. Rev 3, these people need a set. They are obviously in a conference room. This show is awesome, please more regular episodes and a FREEKIN SET!

How do I get stuff on this thing?

Hopefully for those of you that already know how to use iTunes, getting content downloaded is very familiar to you. This article is intended for those that are new to podcasting and using iTunes as their podcatcher (which they will have to do if they intend to use their Apple TV).

Getting Content

See my earlier articles for content. We are going to choose “Stranger Things” for an example.

There are two basic ways to subscribe to a podcast. I recommend trying them in this order.

Through iTunes 7.11
1. Open up iTunes and click on the iTunes Music Store tab located on the left hand column of iTunes.
2. Click the “Podcast” link on the left hand side of the store.
3. Type in “Stranger Things” into the Search bar located at the top right hand corner of iTunes.
4. The search should return “Stranger Things”.
5. Click on the “Subscribe” button. NOTE: These are FREE subscriptions. A lot people I talk to about podcasts tell me that they don’t want to pay for it (Apple makes the subscribe button look a lot like the purchase button). Rest assured, this is free.
6. In the left hand column of iTunes, you will see that a “Download” icon has appeared along with some spinning arrows. If you click on it, you will see the status of your download. Once the episode has downloaded, you will be able to see it in the “Podcast” directory located on the left column in iTunes.

That’s it, your podcast is ready to watch. Every time you hit the “refresh” button when you are in the podcast directory, it will check to see if there is a new episode. You can also automatically allow iTunes to check for new content. For now, you might want to just stick to manual refreshing. Your Apple TV will have the ability to automatically download new content so it will be waiting for you when are are ready to watch it.

Through a direct feed.
Some shows are not on iTunes. There are many reasons why (which we won’t get into), but here’s how to add the shows to iTunes.

Every podcast is delivered via an RSS feed. If you want to impress your friends, you can use this term. If you want to just get stuff on your computer, don’t worry about it. Different web browsers have different ways of accessing RSS feeds. Rule #1 in the podcasting world DON’T USE INTERNET EXPLORER (in fact, rule #2 of podcasting is don’t talk about Internet Explorer). If your are on a PC, use Firefox. If you are on a Mac, Firefox and Safari work well to get your feed info.

1. Do a Google search for “Stranger Things”. The top hit should be their website at www.strangerthings.tv. There should be a icon (either a orange symbol or a blue RSS logo) located on the right hand corner of the URL bar. This is the universal symbol for RSS feeds.
2. Click on that icon in the URL bar. The web page should look different (again depending on the browser).
3. Copy the new URL (usually right click and select copy).
4. Open up iTunes. Under the “Advanced” menu bar, choose “Subscribe to Podcast”. You will see a box open up. Paste your URL there.
5. ITunes will ponder it a second, and then you will notice the same “Download” folder will appear. You podcast will start to download.

Those are the two basic ways of getting podcast content into iTunes. Since I do not yet have an Apple TV, I really can’t show you how to get your content on your Apple TV. It appears that you will be able to sync your Apple TV much like your iPod.

1. Daily Source Code 564: Adam gets back home to the UK and makes some really good points about Mark Cuban's recent comments. Adam always surprises me. Sometimes I get the impression that the man has consumed too much you know what and then a nugget of brilliance falls out. Strange.
2. Buzz Out Loud 3-15-07: The "What is Web 2.0" edition of the show. Tom and Veronica talk about their favorite Web 2.0 sites. I think the show was well done. This is my MUST DOWNLOAD of the day if you are curious about Web 2.0.
3. Buzz Out Loud 3-16-07: Tom reviews his favorite sites to view copyrighted material. Tom, maybe you should try out some independent content created for the web? Most of it is much more interesting than the first two seasons of SG-1.

Last time I covered some great tech-related video podcasts. This time we are going to talk about stuff that doesn’t really pertain to anything but good old entertainment.

1. Ask a Ninja: Ask a Ninja is pretty much just that. It’s hard to explain, but definitely worth subscribing to in iTunes.
2. Infected by Martin Saregent/Martin Sargent Web Drifter: Two funny podcasts. The first is just pretty much bizarre (as only Martin could be). The second feels more like a “Daily Show” piece. The bits are hilarious.
3. Something to be Desired: I know, I just reviewed it, but it’s still worth keeping tabs my favorite radio DJ’s of WANT. Each webisode will keep you wanting more.
4. Stranger Things: This is the first podcast I would recommend to anyone new to the podcasting world. Not only is it presented in HD, but the first story “Sacred Cow” is brilliant. Anyone who was a fan of “Twilight Zone” or “Outer Limits” will love this show.
5. Strong Bad Emails and More: There are a lot of animation podcasts out there. I encourage you to explore for yourself. One of my favorites has to be Strong Bad. Again, it’s something that you just have to see to appreciate.

Great Tech Content for your Apple TV

A lot of stuff on the internet depends on your taste. Since early adopters tend to fall under a certain demographic (male tech geeks between the ages of 20-40), most of my choices will keep that fact in mind.

For the Tech Heads

Let’s face it. We all miss Tech TV. Those were the good old days when we could get home from work (or school) and our old friends would let us know what’s up with the newest tech gadgets, games, and “dark tips”. Well, most of the old Tech TV family has moved onto the internet. Here is just a sample of what you will find.

1. Diggnation: Kevin Rose (voted most likely to form a Web 2.0 company) and Alex Albrecht give you the their unique take on the top stories on Rose’s Digg.com. There is lot of humor and a whole hell of a lot of beer.
2. DL.TV: Patrick Norton and Robert Heron come the closest to keeping the traditional Tech TV feel in their twice weekly podcast. They talk about all manner of tech and their reviews of products are some of the most trustworthy out there.
3. MacBreak Video Version: Leo Laporte and some new friends headline this (occasional) show that is filmed in high def. As the name implies, the content is primarily geared toward Mac Geeks. Leo and company give you all sorts of Mac tips and tricks as well as reporting from Mac events.
4. CommandN: Amber MacAurther gives you the tech happenings of the past week, her brother Jeff lays down a mean tech tip, and they manage to do it looking a whole lot hipper than I could ever be.

Don’t worry, there is other stuff out there that is less Tech TV oriented.

1. Crave from CNET: Remember the old days when CNET was everywhere on every medium? Well, get your fix again with this weekly podcast where host Veronica Belmont shows you what’s hot in tech.
2. GeekBrief.TV: Host Cali Lewis is probably the best new tech talent out there on the web. Her shows are just the right length and make me smile every day. Yes that’s right, Cali puts out a ton of shows each week. Score one for the new person.

I intentionally didn't put the links in to give you a challenge. Just go to iTunes and try and find them yourself (hint, the "search" box at the top of iTunes could probably help). I also encourage you to look in the "podcast" directory on iTunes. You never know what you will find. When you see something you like, click "subscribe" and you will get the latest downloads every time iTunes refreshes. Think of it as a TiVo for your net content.

So that’s a brief look at all sorts of great tech content out there on the web. Later, we will be talking about a ton of great non-tech content you can grab as well.

I know a lot of you out there are awaiting your Apple TV. All the movies and TV shows you have already purchased for your iPod will now be easily transmitted to your TV.

A lot of new Apple TV purchasers may not know that there is even more content that you can access FOR FREE, which makes the Apple TV the single most important distribution device for internet media.

Why do I say this? I know a lot of you will point out that the Xbox does something similar. I always like to respond that most of my friends with Xbox’s have iPods as well. Where have they been getting their media content for years? iTunes. This makes the Apple TV a viable option for most early adopters. Not because of any revolutionary invention on Apple’s part, but because it WORKS with iTunes, something that Apple doesn’t really allow with other devices.

There is so much great content on the web. A lot of the most exciting video and audio content being produced today exists on the web. Call it what you will (podcasts, netcasts, vidcasts) the internet is reshaping how we watch video and listen to audio.

Over the next several days, I will be posting a guide to filling your Apple TV with some of the best content out there on the web. We will talk about the best shows out there to get you started, how you can explore the world of internet content for yourself, and the future of this platform.

Well, the Apple TV finally shipped. I guess I can save up a few more video podcasts to watch this weekend to test the new box out. Look for major Apple TV coverage this week and next.

Today, from my ipod to your eyes.
1. Doctor Who Podshock 70: The gang finds time to rev up for the new season of Doctor Who which starts on the 31st of this month. A very generous fan wants to auction off a figurine to help support the podcast. I think that this shows the level of dedication that fans of a show like this can have. Way to go!

2. Speaking of Beer 25: Charlie and an assorted cast of characters dissect Dogfish Head beers. This innovative Delaware brewery is turning out creative brews that are astounding beer lovers everywhere. Get your hands on some if you can. Charlie's wife was on hand for most of the show. I thought the two of them were excellent together in front of the mic. They should keep doing the podcast together.

3. TWIT 91: Leo takes TWIT LIVE on Talkshoe (the innovative way for podcasters to podcast before a live audience as well as take phone and Skype calls). The episode frankly SUCKED ASS. I think this was the worst TWIT in a year. The format, the guests, and the topics were all rotten. Now, a personal request to Leo. Never, never get Robert Scoble on your podcast ever again. He sucks all the life out of the room. He's like the unpopular kid that comes to the party and then is the most annoying person all night. Your format is spot on Leo. Just keep up with what works. You are the most popular podcast out there. This direction was not the way to go. I'm not against change, just try something different.

Something To Be Desired

Editor’s note: I have only watch two seasons of STBD, there are still TWO MORE for me to see

When I was contacted by “Something To Be Desired’s” promotional team, I almost dumped the email in the trash. I get over 2,000 pieces of spam a day right now, so I thought that this was just another one. Something caught my eye (I don’t remember what that actually was) and I opened the email.

First of all, I would love to give mad props to STBD’s promotional team for finding me. I’m sure they send out tons of stuff, but to find my little corner of the blogosphere was definitely a surprise. They could rep my blog whenever they want.

Unlike “Stranger Things” that focuses more on the traditional realm of the net (geekiness), “STBD” is a straight up “Real”. Its complex story-line and gigantic cast of characters make this show feel like you are watching snippets of any person’s life. I get the same feeling watching this show as I did in the early ‘90’s watching my first independent film, a personal story shot in a very personal way. This is very much lacking from the current “independent” scene that has been taken over by Hollywood. It’s nice to see it back in a new medium.

STBD is set in modern day PA. The tagline of the show “what do you want” pretty much summarizes the plot, twenty somethings that really don’t know what they want in the world. The cast of characters is too large to mention, but all seem to be tied together by an independent radio station WANT (cute). We journey with them as they stumble through their lives in search of something....they just don’t know what.

Season 1 introduces us to a lot of the main characters which can be confusing at first. You could really see the “roughness” of the production. It’s not until Season 2 that I really started to understand everyone. The actors seemed more comfortable with their characters. The production was better as well. Editing was more fluid and natural. Most of all, I started to CARE for the characters.

The cast is what drives this show. There are a lot of standout performances. I’ll just highlight my favorites. Shaun Cameron Hall’s “Dean Dockerty” a radio station DJ that has his ups and downs with women, went from “most hated” for me to “one of the best” after Season 2. Dan Stripp’s “Jack Boyd” the ex-DJ that moves away to a bigger station and then comes back, is a natural in any scene. Finally, Ann Turiano’s “Caroline Boyd” is brilliant as Jack’s sister. While I can’t go into too much detail without spoiling a MUST WATCH for all of you, she is the one that really stands out to me. It’s rare to see someone who really should be destined for fame. Somehow I get that feeling with Ann.

Writer/Producer Justin Kownacki has done a great job with this show. This is just the type of content that will revolutionize how the world views its entertainment. Justin doesn’t use Hollywood PR to force feed you homogenized crap, he makes art and delivers it to you personally without a lot of hype. There doesn’t have to be any hype, because the content speaks for itself.

Is everyone on hiatus? The podcasts are getting fewer and fewer. Also ATTENTION PODSHOW, the DSC 563 is not downloading for some reason.

1. The Daily Source Code 562 finds Adam still in NYC. I think he needs to get out before he starts telling us all to go "f" ourselves. The "great global warming" debate rages on, Adam name drops that he might be at a segment where the Marie Claire folks are going to be interviewing Angelina Jolie, and he plays "Candy Butchers" AGAIN. Seriously Adam find some new stuff.

2. Buzz Out Load is still gone for the week, but a WAY PRERECORDED Tom and Veronica spin an old episode (wink, wink) from 1984. They talk hot new Apple II's, fast baud rate modems, and operating systems featuring ways to use "windows" vs. the old trustworthy command line.

3. Slice of SciFi celebrates its 100th episode with little fanfare. The gang interviews another contributor to the "Sanctuary" webisodic series. Sounds like what Stargate people do for fun in the off season.

That's pitifully it again. Been slowing on the video podcasts because I thought my Apple TV would have shipped by now. Alas, no.

The Lab With Leo starting to come together

Just found out that Leo Laporte's new rebranded "call for help" type show "The Lab With Leo" has a web page. It looks like the show will only air in Canada and Australia right now. They are shopping it around to outlets in America. We here at PCWL wonder how Leo stays sane doing all this stuff.

My suggestion, put it on the net. What Apple doesn't realize yet is that if they had an iTunes submission button for content like this, I would probably pay for it. I would say something like $20 for a season would be fair. If they would get a deal done with the BBC as well so I could get "Dr. Who" and "Life on Mars" the day they come out I would go for that too. Heck, while I'm wishing for things, can I have a pony...an iPony?

Only THREE podcasts downloaded. What's up podosphere? Can't keep up with me?

1. Buzz Out Loud 3-12-2007: The prerecorded gang interviews sex columnist Regina Lynn. They talk porn and Blu Ray vs HD-DVD. Lynn brings up and interesting point that I never thought of. Everyone touts the VHS vs. BETA (god I loved beta) wars being settled by porn. Now there are so many options including the internet for pornographic content that the DVD wars might simply not be an issue today. Instead, porn may be pointing the way for the "average" user to the web, not to a plastic disc. Only time will tell. I hate to say it, but if BOL did more interviews rather than a "news wrap up" format, I think I would enjoy it better.

2. Buzz Out Loud 3-13-07: This has to be my favorite podcast to date for BOL. In "The Generic Podcast 2.0" edition of the show. Prerecorded Tom and Veronica manage to pretty much wrap up almost every major story in a very general way. My favorite was Apple will come out with a new product at a conference, or a MacWorld, or just some random Tuesday. This is a MUST DOWNLOAD (my new highest recommendation) for everyone. It's short and very funny.

3. MacBreak Weekly 33: Leo and the gang (that would be a bad band combination) talk about the various "Get a mac" ads in different countries as well as a great discussion of why .Mac sucks. Many "rat holes" are ventured down as well. MBW is starting to become my replacement for TWIT. I'm enjoying it so much more. Does anyone else get the feeling that TWIT is starting to want to be like MBW? I don't think that the TWIT formula should be modified to be more MBW like. It's starting to show signs of heading in that direction (unfortunately).

Hey everyone.

No sooner did I get back on track with the video podcasts that I dumped several of them accidentally without writing the much needed info down. So I apologize to CommandN, The Merlin Show, GeekBrief, Cranky Geeks, and TeXtra if I don't use the correct show numbers.

Since I am once again infected with the cold that won't go away, I thought I would do a text version of "Around the Podosphere". No one wants to hear my sick, mucusy voice.

Around the Podosphere "Video Style".

1. On "The Merlin Show" (3 and 4?) Merlin flouts his visit to Google by interviewing two developers. Once seems very organized and one doesn't. I have to admit that the second interview was a bit distracting, from that thing (a boom mic?) that was over Merlin's head occasionally popping into view to my intense curiosity of what exactly was in that red "slushy-like" drink. It looked good.

2. "GeekBrief" shows you how to convert your mac (how many computers do you have Cali?) into a media center. Cali also takes part in the first (at least that I have seen) filmed "Geek Porn" moment as she joyously unwraps the case and components for her new media center. It was like watching a kid in a candy store.

3. "Cranky Geeks" was cranky geeks. I'm starting to like Roger Chang more and more. The guy gets pushed in the back between the egos on TWIT. It's nice to see him on his own for once. And that Dvorak actually let him talk.

4. "TeXtra" (episode 1) was OK. I know, I shouldn't be one to judge new podcasts (my own?) but this did seem rather blah. I'm thinking about waiting with pocasts until they have released episode 10 to review them. The format needs something different. This just seems like another news and opinion show that really doesn't hit the mark so far with me. Hopefully we will see something different in the next episodes. that "two shot" was also making me a little queezy the same feeling I get with "InDigital".

5. CommandN takes up residence once again near a graffiti wall in some back Toronto alley and delivers a short, but informative show. Will Pate is a refreshing addition to the show. I think that he does an excellent job. Amber is right on target as usual and seems to be doing show notes from her phone. That was a bit distracting, but heck, I'd be doing the same thing. CommandN is starting to give me a "tech dealer" feeling. You meet this two shady characters in the back alley and they give you a hit of tech news. Strange I know, but it makes CommandN original and one of the best podcasts out there.

So that is ATP (Around the Podosphere) for today. I'll probably be back in text form tomorrow as well to talk about the audio podcasts that have been trickling into my ears.

Stranger Things: Brilliant and Dark

I had the great privilege to finally sit down and watch "Stranger Things" last night. I must say that most of the night, I couldn't sleep because once again, I was seeing the future of content on the net.

Stranger Things is the creation of Earl Newton. He diligently put out update after update on the web. This set up expectations in my mind. I figured that the acting and the sets were all going to be second rate. I believed (and I think that I mistakenly wrote) that the sets were going to be green screen. I pretty much thought that Newton was trying to put up a second rate "Twilight Zone".

That stereotype was shattered last night with the first episode "Sacred Cow". Not only was the feature shot in beautiful high definition, but everything from the acting to the sets were first class. I'm a big fan of Scott Sigler as well. Finding out that he actually wrote this story really added to my enjoyment of it.

"Sacred Cow" tells the story of a Catholic priest and his orphaned savant ward who come up with a way to "see" people's prayers. An investigation by another priest leads to an examination of the true nature of religion. I'm not going to go into much more, less I spoil the plot. YOU HAVE TO SEE IT FOR YOURSELVES.

If the stories, acting, and brilliant cinematography stay at this level, "Stranger Things" is sure to be one of the first true episodic hits on the web.

There is only a few more weeks until the next episode. My advice to you is to subscribe on iTunes or go to the website right away. It is my firm belief that we are seeing the equivalent of groundbreaking 50's TV on the net. It's only going to get better as people such as Newton obtain more funding and a way to monetize their creations.

With content like this on the net, I might as well throw out my TV.

My credit card just got charged for Apple TV goodness. I think that means that my little toy is finally on its way.

No more nights reviewing video podcasts from the squeeky chair at my desk. Ahhhh.

Let's just hope that I don't fall asleep instead. With the content that I have been reviewing recently, I don't think that is much of an issue. I'm watching the future of TV being born. It's very exciting.

PodCast Wasteland 004: Bum Rush This

PodCast Wasteland 004 is up and running.

We try out short format podcasts and talk about "Bum Rush the Charts", an attempt by independent podcasters and podsafe artists to push an indie artist to the top of the iTunes charts for just one day (March 22nd).

The artists chosen are Black Lab, one of the best podsafe artists out there. The track is "Mine Again". I play another song by Black Lab "See the Sun" in the podcast.

If you use the affiliate link at www.bumrushthecharts.com to purchase the track, all the proceeds will go to a college scholarship fund administered by the financial aid podcast. Black Lab has announced that they will give 50% of their earnings to the scholarship fund as well. So you are doing a good thing by allowing independent podcasters and artists to be heard as well as helping students with their educational needs.

Mark the 22nd of March down on your calendar. Bum Rush the charts. Make the large corporate music entities notice us and the effect that we have on the internet.

Today Michael Eisner (of "Mickey says hello" fame) is launching vuguru.com an IPTV site that is flush with cash and out to produce a ton of content for the net.

Word is that it will debut on the net with its first show "Prom Queen" which is going to produce an astounding 80 episodes this year.

With more and more people jumping into the video podcast arena, I'm going to be busy for a long time to come.

Clean Tag REVOKED on MacBreak Weekly

The other cool news to come out of MBW this week was the removal of the "clean" tag. I think that the MacBreakers have needed this for a long time. Don't worry young kids, so far it's been pretty tame.

And we get to learn of Scott Bourne's unhealthy fascination with Hooters restaurants.

No sooner do I dump "The Tech Guy" that I find out on "MacBreak Weekly" that TTG has been picked up by XM Radio. The show is on XM Extreme Channel 152 (LIVE 2–5p Eastern, REPLAY 8–11p Eastern) Saturday and Sunday. This is great exposure for Leo. If you have friends that have XM, let them know.

Why I'm dropping "The Tech Guy"

I decided to drop my subscription of "The Tech Guy" with Leo Laporte.

Here are my (hopefully) sensible reasons.
1. The show is TOO LONG. I know it's a radio show, but I guess the bloom is off the rose for me with radio.
2. The show is too simplified. I know these are supposed to be "average" callers, but when I'm answering the questions faster than Leo, I know that I probably should be sticking to TWIT and net@nite.

So don't hate me Leo for dropping you. Your other podcasts are some of the best out there. I wish the show the best. You deserve to be in syndication and I pray for an XM deal.

Doin' the iPOD Shuffle (from Really Random Reviews)

At first I was a bit skeptical about the new iPOD shuffle. I thought that it was pretty much a waste of money for very limited control (you can only play music straight through or on shuffle) until I realized that all I listened to were podcasts.

Podcasts on the shuffle make sense. Most of the time, the amount of podcasts that I listen to are well below the 1 Gig limit of the shuffle. There is a bit of technical wizardry involved in getting it to sync right. It is not as easy or as quick as the other iPods. The lack of a great podcast sync option is my biggest gripe with the shuffle. For regular listening the "autofill" option is fantastic. Just designate a playlist and it randomly fills up your iPod. For me, I insert my unplayed podcasts and then autofill the rest of the shuffle to it's limit with my favorite "Code Monkey" playlist.

The shuffle really makes my listening life easier. I work in a lab where it gets annoying to carry around a bulky iPOD all day. The shuffle clips to my lab coat and allows me to easily toggle it on or off when I need to. I look like a "Star Trek: The Next Generation" character activating his communicator most of the time, but it really is a lot easier. The buttons take a little longer to get used to. If you have an Apple remote control, you will get used to the shuffle controls fast because the shuffle basically is an Apple remote miniaturized. Heck, the whole player is so small that my big, fat fingers have a tough time with it. After a few hours, it started to get easier and by the end of the day I was operating it without even looking at the controls.

I was afraid I would look MORE dorky by wearing it, but I had several compliments yesterday about how cool it was. The color seems to be the attractive factor. I choose the orange primarily because Apple has not done an orange color before on its iPod.

I think this is a good second player for all of you out there with iPods. It would be great for exercising and places where you don't want to fiddle with your full sized iPod.

Plus that orange is really snappy.

New iTunes Released

Apple has released an iTunes update. Clicking the "preferences" shows me a nice Apple TV icon. This would seem to indicate that Apple TV's will be shipping soon. My guess is that this will be the last of the "7.0" releases for iTunes.

Never fear, we are getting closer to the Apple TV.

No, I didn't get my Apple TV, I just took a hard look at reality and realized that I have over 15 hours built up already of unwatched video podcasts. To save my sanity, I have to get some of these reviewed and on their merry way to my trash bin.

Plus, most of my reviews will be REALLY outdated on the video side if I don't keep up with things.

Am I weak willed? Sure. Am I smart to do this? You bet. I shouldn't be punishing podcasters for something that Apple did (or failed to do).

I've been so busy at work, all i really want to do is go home and go to sleep.

The mountain of snow in my driveway every morning isn't helping things either. I'm concentrating on getting PCWL 003 out. That helps a lot. It's nice to see what I've listened to already this week. It's a pretty poor showing I think. I usually listen to a lot more podcasts in a week. Oh well. I'll try harder next week.
